Edinburgh motorists line up for checks as 1 in 5 has dangerously low oil

The National Oil Check Roadshow began in Scotland on Monday 15 June, with visitors to the Gyle Shopping Centre being the first to be offered free oil and screenwash top-ups.

Cars filed into the Oil Check Point throughout the day for their quick five-minute check, where not only did they learn their current oil level, but also discovered which type of oil was best for their car.

The statistics were just as worrying as those gathered from Comma's previous research - 17% of those checked - almost one in five - had oil levels that were below the absolute minimum level, meaning they required an urgent top up.

One of the most severe cases was the driver of a Toyota Rav 4 from nearby Colinton, whose sump was barely showing a trace of oil.

"The indicator light had come on for low engine oil, but I thought it was a problem with the indicator - I didn't think it was a problem with the oil," she commented. "I'd asked my husband on several occasions if he would check it, but he said I was panicking over nothing!" Comma gave her a free top-up and she was on her way, having discovered that husbands don't always know what's important when it comes to cars!

As the Roadshow left Scotland, motorists were still able to visit a wide range of Oil Check Points across the country to get their oil checked free of charge.
