This table shows the advice given by car manufacturers when the oil warning light comes on.

Audi Oil lights for pressure, level and sensor malfunction If red light illuminates, stop immediately; if yellow light illuminates stop as soon as possible
BMW Two ways to check on oil levels and pressure. With iDrive this is in the service info menu. Without iDrive any warning is displayed in the info panel between the speedo and the rev counter An engine warning light that illuminates above the speedo and rev counter warns if there are problems (including oil) with the engine. It illuminates orange if there's a need to go to a dealer - red means stop the car now
Chevrolet Oil pressure warning light If the warning light illuminates, stop the engine and check the oil level. If it remains illuminated, contact authorised dealer
Citroen Oil pressure warning light Stop engine immediately
Daihatsu Engine oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, stop car immediately
Ford Oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so, check oil level. Contact dealer if top-up does not correct problem
Honda Oil lights for pressure, level and sensor malfunction All models up to 2006 oil pressure light (red light) only - stop engine immediately. ISUZU Engine oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, stop car immediately
Kia Oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, turn off engine as soon as it is safe to do so
Mazda Engine oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, stop car immediately
Nissan Engine oil pressure warning light If the light flickers or comes on during normal driving, pull off the road in a safe area, stop the engine immediately and call a NISSAN dealer or qualified workshop
Peugeot Oil pressure warning light. Some models have a separate oil level indication system If the oil level gets low the driver will get a message on the instrument panel stating low oil level. If the engine oil pressure warning light illuminates, it indicates the occurrence of a fault in the engine lubrication circuit. Stop the engine immediately and as safely as possible
Renault Oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, turn off engine as soon as it is safe to do so
SEAT There are separate lights for low oil pressure and low oil level Red light (low oil pressure): stop immediately. Yellow light (low oil level): stop as soon as safe and legal to do so, check oil level
Subaru Engine oil pressure warning light If light illuminates, stop car immediately
Toyota Oil pressure warning light Stop and check oil level as soon as possible if red light illuminates
Vauxhall Oil pressure warning light If the warning light illuminates, stop the engine and check the oil level. If it remains illuminated, contact authorised dealer
Volkswagen Separate lights for low oil pressure & low oil If the oil warning lamp illuminates red (sometimes accompanied by three audible bleeps, depending on model) the oil pressure is low and the engine should be switched off. At this point the engine oil level should be checked and topped up as required. If the warning lamp still displays red the engine should not be run and expert Volkswagen help should be sought
Volvo Oil pressure warning light Stop the engine immediately and check the engine oil level, top up if necessary. If the symbol lights up and the oil level is normal contact an authorised Volvo workshop
